This workshop uses photography as a “tool,” encouraging the visually impaired to express themselves and stimulate their inner creativity. By recording how they see the world, others are given the opportunity to understand and appreciate their world.

Artist Mark Salvatus’ visit to Taipei wasn’t very long, but he left behind a lovely “Wrapped” work. He used the side of a wall at Bamboo Curtain Studio and invited passersby to “lend” something, leaving their individual footprint on the wall. Thus, the wall became a work of art.

Take the Ten Scenes of West Lake (Xihu) in Hangzhou for example, Liu Tien thinks that moving from place to place is the best part of traveling around the West Lake. The West Lake is ideal for people walking back and forth. It is not a suitable way sitting on tour buses to sightsee.

The Finger Players’ Founder Tan Beng Tian and Artistic Director Ong Kian Sin were greeted with a hectic schedule upon their arrival at Bamboo Curtain Studio in November. In addition to visiting Zhuwei’s community members, they were also busy holding workshops, making puppets, and producing a film.

Bamboo Curtain Studio Artist-in-Residence Vivian Wenli Lin holds a photography and video production workshop. Five foreign spouses participated in the workshop, including one from China and four from Vietnam.

Vivian Wenli Lin specially arranged the video screenings, inviting the students from the workshop and their families and friends to participate. Most of the participants will be in attendance to share and exchange their work and experiences.

  2013 Creative Talents

Bamboo Curtain Studio’s “2013 Creative Talents” Selection Results

Unlike previous years, this year’s selection includes three artists or groups. Each Artist-in-Residence is given up to two months of free accommodation and workspace. Bamboo Curtain Studio anticipates that each artist or group has ample time to practice creative ideas and participate in in-depth community groups, promoting cooperation and exchange within local networks.

Four City Forum Drives Urban Cultural Exchange

The City-to-City Cultural Exchange Conference brings scholars together annually to report and learn from each other on and off stage. Through comparison and exchange, the Taiwanese audience is able to understand the cultural development processes in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In addition to promoting cultural exchange among the four cities, the meeting also gives locals the opportunity to have a deeper understanding of the Taipei’s advantages to other cities in China.

Utopia is Incapable of Survival | Huang Pei Wei

Featuring interlaced gauze and woven cordon, the materials gradually melt over time through changes in weather. Thus, the work gradually dilapidates until it becomes completely disintegrated. This kind of process-based installation seems to instruct on how politics and survival are intertwined (symbiotic attachment). Ultimately, the outcome is inevitable as the decline collapses. Utopia is incapable of survival.
