Imagine a cultural organization for the next generation

Alternative space, artist village, policy makers, platforms, etc. How could the individual cultural organizations in the next generation re-define the praxis and sustain?

Imagine a cultural organization for the next generation — BCS 25 Anniversary Workshop #4

Introduction

As the first non-profit cultural space in Taiwan, BCS has been a residency space for international independent artists, and an arena for creative work and exhibition for the past 25 years. In this workshop, we want to set our eyes on 2020, and explore ways to connect independent cultural spaces meaningfully and to achieve sustainable operation. Let’s pool our resources and create a better world together.

Cross-nation exhibitions, global research, international network connection...what kind of energy and dynamics could be sparked by global exchange events initiated by the private sector? In an age where global trends are fast changing, what is the strategy we need to build global connection?

The speakers are from Taiwan, Indonesia and Japan, including a complex of a creative art space and resturant, art platform that connects Taiwan, Hongkong and Macau artists, a community art factory, and the artist-in-residence program in a love hotel. On the 1st day the speakers will share their stories and on the 2nd day they will lead the workshop and group discussion. Welcome to join us. Let’s talk and share your ideas!

Where is PARADISE? – Matsudo: A Point of Transit

PARADISE AIR is an artist-in-residence program located in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, conveniently close to yet comfortably removed from the bustle of central Tokyo. We are accumulating its own history as a cultural and artistic transit point where visitors, both from Japan and overseas, can stop off along their artistic journeys. Caring even a small pleasure happening every day, various things and people are connected, including everyday life and art beyond the location at PARADISE AIR. How can artist-in-residence, which is neither art museum nor art gallery, connect city and people, furthermore, local and the world? This time, we’d like to share conversation and seek ideas and possibilities emerging from activities of artist-in-residence that can be passed to the next generation.

PARADISE AIR is an artist-in-residence program located in Matsudo, Chiba Prefecture, conveniently close to yet comfortably removed from the bustle of central Tokyo. The program is held on the vacant floors of a former hotel, a setting afforded to us by the Rakuen pachinko parlor (a pinball-gambling establishment) that occupies the bottom floors of this building owned by Hamatomo Corporation. We launched the program in 2013, naming ourselves PARADISE AIR after this “Rakuen” – “paradise” in English – combined with “AIR,” the acronym for “artist-in-residence.”

  •  Ken-Yao CHANG/Zit-Dim Art Space (Taiwan)/Artist

1992 Born in Taipei, Taiwan, he is currently working and living in Tainan. Chang’s creation involves sculptures and site-specific works. Early focus on the difficult field between space and environment, it derives the realistic volume and weight of sculpture itself. It’s like something that collides when you look back at a painting in the exhibition, which makes you feel Incorporate but abrupt. After that, he is thinking about the transition of the fixation of sculpture to the site-specific installation. Soon, the time series, histories in space will be used, try to use the Interlaced, misplaced, and the possibility of extending another layer of interface between image space and real space.
