9/14 Day 1

This is what the pound looked like before the artificial wetland workshop.
9/14 was the first day of class. A presentation with theoretical contents, case examples, and images was made to introduce to the students the basic concept of artificial wetlands.
Self introduction is a must for 1st day of class! Students introduce themselves one by one to get to know each other.
Water lettuces took up most of the pound. The workshop instructor, Brook Chen, talks to the students about the water plant’s root systems and how it reproduces.
The first hands-on session. The more (people) the merrier! Students pump water while collecting water lettuces. Hurry before the rain comes!
The legendary “frog suits,” aka waders. Students getting ready to go into the water.
Thank goodness for this gap in between heavy rains. We were able to complete our huge assignment for today-collecting all the water lettuces.
Typhoon day. We had to utilize part of our time indoors doing water quality testing.

9/28 Day 2

2nd day for hands-on work. Sunny. After pumping water for a whole week, muddy floor appeared at the bottom of the pound.A small talk before the session. A good way to avoid the burning afternoon sun.The soil team works hard on packaging bags full of soil. The mound of dirt doesn't seem like it is becoming any smaller…The first layer of soil dam. One has to stamp on the bags of soil after they are put into place. The bags seem small but are actually quite heavy.Break time. The fruit of our labor today.
