2012到2013年間，世界發生經濟危機，同時，台灣有遠見的思考者提醒著我們，台灣已經漸漸失去國際競爭力。也因為這些人的疾呼，出現許多相關研究並設立獎勵年輕人出國的獎學金。《AIR－藝術家的心靈行旅》希望提供一些方向與方式，鼓勵文化工作者嘗試走出舒適圈，實在地體驗另一種文化。

上網找資料作研究或出國拿個學位，也許只會學到別人的價值、符合他人的要求，然而，如果給自己一個機會，以開放的態度面對，誠實地看見自己，獨特的創意想法就會油然而生，這也就是旅行的本質───看見新事物、看見當地人的獨特性，不管好壞，不做價值判斷，只知道那是與你不同的文化。在這樣的過程中，你會體認到自己是誰、自己的故鄉、教育及文化等等，然後，珍惜與滋養你所擁有的。你會發現每一個人都是獨特的，都有自己的創意，最後，你將會投資在自己內在心靈，滋養內在創意的種子。

我們真誠的相信台灣具備屬於自己的價值，台灣的創意輸出對於自己的社會與國際的社群有其價值與貢獻。當你在旅行時，你將會被問到：你是誰？這將會讓你重新認識自己，並與其他文化產生連結。

As the global economic crisis continues between 2012 and 2013, Taiwanese visionary
thinkers are reminding us of the gradual loss of Taiwan’s competitive edge on the
international stage. These warnings have led to the establishment of many new
research grants and travel scholarships for Taiwan’s youth. AIR-Artist in Residency
offers a direction and an opportunity, encouraging cultural workers to reach beyond
the familiar and experience another culture.

By obtaining a degree overseas or researching information online, you will only
learn the values of others and conform to their demands. However, if you just allow
yourself an opportunity and maintain an open mind, a new wave of uniquely creative
ideas will surface. This is the essence of travel—it allows you to see new cultures
and the uniqueness of others, be they good or bad elements, without judgment but
recognizing contrast with your own culture. In this process, you will realize who you
are, including your birthplace, your education, and your culture, and you will feel the
need to treasure and nurture the uniqueness of that which you have. You will see
that everyone is unique and everyone is creative in his or her own way, and thus you
will be confident to invest in your inner mind and feed that inner core of creativity.

We believe that Taiwan has its unique niche, and its creative output is a valuable
contribution to our society, as well as to the international community. When you
travel to other cultures, you will be asked to tell and show others who you are and
what it is that you feel is most valuable about Taiwan, the island of Formosa. Only
then will you be able to connect with other cultures and re-acquaint with yourself.
