Press Release 2012.09.18

Bamboo Curtain Studio presents "AIR: The Journey of the Artist’s Mind,” including Ding Chang Wen’s dual exhibition opening "Memory, The Night Market in Two Cities,” An Junshi’s outdoor art installation “The Blessing of the North Coast," and a presentation of French dancer Claude AYMON’s collaboration with a creative team of eco-dancers.

"AIR- The Journey of the Artist’s Mind" will move to Bamboo Curtain Studio in September following the exhibition’s completion at Stock 20 in Taichung. Bamboo Curtain Studio is a long-term residency program that has accumulated a wealth of international resources. The main purpose of the exhibition is to give Taiwanese artists a better understanding of residency opportunities abroad, thus allowing them to experience different national conditions and a variety of novelties. Bamboo Curtain Studio aims to become a platform for international exchange in Asia and to provide more opportunities for Taiwan artists abroad.

Ding Chang Wen and Claude AYMON were selected as the rising artist’s to participate in Bamboo Curtain Studio’s Artist-in-Residency in September. Since it’s launch in 2009, Bamboo Curtain Studio has upheld it’s main purpose: to provide a venue and an opportunity for artists to develop their creative ideas through experimentation, cooperation, and research. Furthermore, in cooperation with the Taitung Railway Art Village’s “Artist Exchange Program,” Bamboo Curtain Studio’s Resident Artists and recommended artists from Taitung are able to create and exchange with each other. One of the features artists is Rukai tribe artist An Junshi of Taitung’s Railway Art Village.

Ding Chang Wen will present his exhibition "Memory, The Night Market in Two Cities." He believes that a person's sense of taste is actually stronger than a person’s visual sensation. His studies also prove that the brain’s memory is close to the part of the brain that controls taste, thus past memories are often evoked through taste. “Memory, The Night Market in Two Cities” will open at 4:30 pm on Saturday, September 22. There will be an artist talk with Curator Ms. Wang Junqi and Tainan National University of the Arts Department of Materials Creation and Design lecturer Mr. Shen Baicheng.

French dancer Claude AYMON has choreographed video and dance works in this creative voice. His creative inspiration is drawn from the mythological heroes: Sisyphus from Greece and Wu Gang from China. He hopes to illustrate the mythical heroes of East and West through this series of choreographic works. The dance will be in the form of a short 30-minute performance repeated three times with three different kinds of music. The music is derived from Claude’s residency in Taiwan. After a five-day workshop in cooperation with a creative team of Dancecology, an eco-dance group, a public review of the workshop will be held on Sunday, September 23 from 5-7pm at the Taipei National University of Arts Department of Drama’s Ecology Hall Rehearsal Room.

Aboriginal artist An Junshi specializes in recycling wood to make furniture and installation works. “The Blessing of the North Coast” will be installed in Bamboo Curtain Studio’s back garden. The idea originated when the artist visited the beach to look for materials during her residency in the North Coast and came to the realization that the shore’s waste would destroy the beautiful sea. She hopes that by shaping God’s trees into works of art and blessing the environment of the North Coast that it will no longer be subjected to human destruction.

Mainly working in installation and performance art, an outdoor installation work "Sugar Cube Plan”of an Taiwanese artist, Chi, New-York, will also be on display. A Resident Artist at Chiayi Railway Art Village, he also participated in the exhibition at Stock 20 in Taichung.

The exhibitions and artist discussions will be held at Bamboo Curtain Studio from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Saturday, September 22. Claude AYMON’s free workshop performance will be presented on Sunday, September 23 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Taipei National University of the Arts.
