Creative Collaboration as Catalyst for Change

Creative Collaboration as Catalyst for Change

Bamboo Curtain Studio (BCS) being an art organization, has accompanied many art creatives for more than 22 years. In the recent 10 years, BCS has operated as artist-in-residency. We have worked with professional curators, artists, educators and environmentalists to examine social issues such as urban sustainability, environmental preservation and community engagement via art practices. In 2015, we proposed the vision as “Social Change” and seek to “ Share, Connect and Co-create”. we continued to deepen the idea of Social Change and entitled the program as“Creative Collaboration as Catalyst for Change”in 2016-2017. We encouraged creatives to use the idea of co-creation to trigger the possibility and imagination of social change.

We believe there is no single answer for everything and there is not one fix model to practice the idea. We keeps searching the different possibilities via experiments. After couple years, we have discovered diverse conversations through co-creation. We provide the space and opportunities to bring in different participants to understand each other and exchange different opinion through these conversations. In other words, the definition of “Co-Creation” doesn't necessarily limited in traditional cooperation, like team work. It would be more like alternative knowledge production by people who has different background. The focus is not on the presentation of the results, but in the process to stimulate the flipping of mindset, and then the driving force. In terms of artistic terminology, this is part of Participatory Art. In terms of the design terminology, this is Design Thinking. No matter how we call it. This is to break the preset statement, since each one of us represents an individual and we shall speak our voice, which together, produce the multiple perspectives that society needs.

Fei (WU Hung-Fei), the independent curator, conducted interviews and researches on the 10 selected artists (art groups) in Taiwan to elaborate how creative collaboration brings different approaches in their creation and productions between 2015-2016. The interviewees included Sandwiches Studio, YU Hao-Wei, WU Shu-Lun, WU DarKuen, WU Mali, CHANG Chun Shang   PENG Hsiao-yin, TANG Huang-Chen, HUANG Jui Mao and YE Pei-Ru. These past BCS resident artists shared their stories on how to initiate their new ideas, how to develop their new experiments via artist-in-residency programs, and how that affect their own careers. The diverse experience of art practices and performance not only help them jump out of comfort zone and make transition on their own works, but also inspire the participants in their process of art engagement to switch their perspective and make changes.

In 2016, after the introduction by Shezidao Academy of Aesthetics, Bamboo Curtain Studio and Guandu Nature Park met the Scout Troop of Fuan Elementary School and developed a small program together called "Shezi Adventure" within 3 months. The Project WET has been conducted by Guandu Nature Park for many years. This is the first time they collaborated with artists to lead children to observe the water resource on their school campus, and record the surroundings through their eyes, ears and hearts, then to transform these feeling via creative ways. It encouraged them to imagine the past and the future of their hometown - Shezi from their own perspectives. Bamboo Curtain Studio invited the residency artists, like Ketemu (Indonesia), Walking grass agriculture (Taiwan) and Koh Wan Ching(Singapore)to join this project.

Guandu Nature Park and Bamboo Curtain Studio will continue to deliver these collaborative programs in elementary schools, high schools and adult education system.  It tends to help the participants find out their own intimate connection with nature.  Through courses in environmental education and art experience on the water issue, we hope it creates an awareness via this experience of environmental aesthetics.

It takes a long period of observation to trace the behavior change of both creatives and the participants. Artist-in-Residence focus on process, which is different from outcome-oriented exhibitions or performances. This goes back to the starting point of the project. It’s unavoidable to see culture shock while resident artists settles into unfamiliar environment. It takes time to learn from different culture and reconstruct the self-awareness, like mirror’s reflection and projection, in order to clarify the changes in themselves. These all requires time, not just for the creators, but also for participants. Each one will take different time to experience the process and it’s hard to tell the change right away.

About Guandu Nature Park

Guandu Nature Park is located in the Guandu plain scouring by Tamsui and Keelung rivers. It is an important stopover site for migrating birds. However, the environment of wetland was destroyed by rapidly economic development of Taipei city. In order to protect the biodiversity, the conservationists from all fields made a great effort to request government to establish the reserve area. Finally, the Taipei city government set up Guandu Nature Park in 1996. Because of this history background, Guandu Nature Park commits to nature conservation, habitat maintenance¸ and appeals to everyone to protect nature through the education and art.
