Recollecting the Flow - a collaboration project in progress

This art for environment initiative promotes the Creative Commons philosophy of open source information, public access and community participation. It offers a suggestion for social change; Where is your river or stream and why can our children not play in it?

The collaboration team comprises Timbil, chemical engineer and bio-hacker (Life-Patch, INDO), science teacher Mr Chen and Andrea a visual artist (NZ) - each coming from different backyard neighborhoods where there is concern for natural water ecology. Bamboo Curtain Studios provides the essential framework or centre of operations by activating social networks in conduit with the Plum Tree Project.

This co-lab process allows participants to work outside of usual constraints and conventions. Both artist and scientist together trace the river, collect samples and check against existing data the investigation of what is in the water? ‘Thinking conversations’ about water quality have evolved from the group exploration of school and community workshops.

Recollection includes gathering factual data, memories and stories common to human experience. Andrea uses tactical mapping to explore an unfamiliar landscape and the visual transference of data an attempt to ‘belong to’ a place. Her artworks give dramatic shape to environmental extremes where urban design and technology is seen in stark contrast to the natural geography.

The resulting sum-of-all-parts installation is an effort to make visible the invisible and inform sections of ‘lost river’. Representation is on a human scale and underpinned by the universal - ebb/flow, rhythm and pulse, the life-change dynamic in celebration of the purifying property of water, a most essential element.
