The Artists Village
Pulau Ubin Artist-in-Residency Program
Singapore

We are conducting an open call for artists to apply for the residency. This Artist In Residency (AIR) program is located in Pulau Ubin. The AIR program will be offering artists an opportunity to stay in a kampung house and work in a studio space while on the island of Pulau Ubin. Both are on separate locations about 30 mins by walking or 10 mins by taxi service from the main jetty. We have a vision to use the island as a canvas to create art. The artists will be staying in the residency house with a workshop facility for basic tool-working. This residency is an attempt to get cultural and art practitioners to work in close contact with one of the last corners with a comparatively unspoiled natural environment than the urban city on the main island of Singapore. We hope to provide a chance for artists to develop a different perspective from the experience and recommend intending participants to inculcate a view towards working in and with nature and eco-friendlier art practices in this unique residency.

This project is organized by The Artists Village and funded by the National Arts Council and Arts Fund.

Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin is a granite island and is the most natural and rustic location in Singapore. It will take 10 mins via bumboat from Changi to the island. It is a throwback to Singapore in the 1960's. The island is home to Singapore's last villages or "Kampongs". Pulau Ubin residents rely on wells for water and noisy diesel generators for electricity, which is an eco friendlier way of living. Singapore being an urban city and natural resource is scarce, Pulau Ubin is the perfect location for both local and international artists to return back to the past and nature. The island gives out a nostalgic vibe the moment you set your eyes on it.
